River Tara all together with the canyon valley was enlisted in 1977 by UNs program “Man and Biosphere” in the world's registry of ecological reservation biospheres.
Tara takes its source from the top of the mountain Komovi and streams through 150 km long flow till the point of junction with the river Piva forming the new river called Drina.
It penetrates a profound and impressive canyon separating two big mountains Durmitor and Ljubisnja.
Depth of the canyon varies depending on the altitude of the mountains and in some points reaches even 1300m.
The average depth is around 1000m, and thanks to this characteristic it is often called “Montenegrin Colorado”. It is certainly most profound, most beautiful and the longest canyon in Europe. It has more than 80 caves, there is also a rich variety of birds and animals and there is plenty of fish in the river. River Tara is also very popular for its whirlpools and rapids, that's why very attractive for rafting. Every season there are numerable raftings organized with wooden or rubber rafts. Starting point is a place called Splaviste and duration their duration can vary from one up to four days depending on the length of the chosen path.
Every year there are more and more persons willing to try this attraction that's why Ski centar Durmitor organizes three camp points for the use of tourists.(at the start point, at Radovan Luka, and at Brstovnica). It has been also built a motel with all the necessary contents for tourists in the heart of the canyon. |
