Tivat is situated in the central part of Boka Kotorska, at 42o 26' of the North Geographical Latitude and 18o 42' of the Eastern Geographical Longitude. The Municipality has around 15.000 inhabitants, the area totals to 46 km2. The climate is Mediterranean with even 2.446 hours of sunshine per year and 115 days per year with air temperature over 25o C, while the average yearly temperature is 15o C. It is not known whether its name originates from the name of the Illyrian queen Teuta, who, it is supposed, had a summer resort in Tivat, or from the name of the Christian saints Theodorus, Theodosius, Theudo, Teodo or, on the other hand, from the Celtic word "touto" (town). |

Tivat is the only town on the Montenegrin Riviera, which does not have the old city core, but has the Summer Resort Buca (harmonious Renaissance environment in the downtown Tivat), Gornja Lastva (Upper Lastva) (the unique rural entity at 300 m above the sea level), island Prevlaka (or Miholjska Prevlaka or “Island of Flowers”) with St. Archangel Michael monastery complex, Saint Mark (or Stradioti Island), a very beautiful excursion site – beach Przno (or the “Blue Horizons”) and the natural marina Kalimanj in the town itself. It has as well 7 hotels with around 1700 beds, around twenty arranged beaches and bathing sites, 10 travel agencies and around 4000 beds in private accommodation, 6 auto-camps and nearly 60 various catering facilities.
It has also a very rich non-professional cultural and entertainment events through around fifteen societies of various types, it has not got a theatre, but has the Culture Centre with, in the last five-six years, the best theatre production in the areas of former Yugoslavia, the Olympiad of Boka Kotorska and the popular open-air Summer Feasts. It has a sport hall “Zupa” and only it has the Airport on the Montenegrin Riviera.
Tivat needs for the real tourist swing it had in years 70's of the last century, “the fresh (tourist) blood” since all active facilities date from the past times, and the renowned tourist settlement “Island of Flowers” and even more renowned “Club Mediteranee" have not been operating since long.
