Podgorica is situated in the Zeta Plain, in the area where Zeta, Moraca, Ribnica, Cijevna and Sitnica meet, at 44 m above the sea level. Podgorica is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Republic of Montenegro. This is a town with lot of greenery and five rivers. Moraca and Ribnica pass directly through the town and divide it on three parts. The town is relatively well solved in terms of city planning, but with insufficient parking space. In the times of Illyrians this area was populated by the tribes of Labeati and Docleati. Through its tempestuous history the town changed several names. In the Roman times it was Birziminium, Ribnica after the settling of Slavs and in the Nemanjic times, and it develops under the name Podgrica since 1326. Pursuant to some written sources, Ribnica is mentioned for the first time in 12 th century as the city at the mouth of the river of Ribnica into Moraca. During the Turks, the houses, mosques and fortifications were built in the city in the Oriental style. Since 1879, when the town became once again Montenegrin, it started to develop on the right bank of Ribnica and this part is known as Nova varos (New town) or Mirkova varos (Town of Mirko). The Old town is partly preserved up to these days. In the Second World War Podgorica was razed to the ground. After the rebuilding of the destroyed building, the town started to develop rapidly. Podgorica is nearly in the whole the new town, with buildings of modern architecture. Over fifty buildings were built in Podgorica, and some of them are designed in modern fashion, in particular those built in the last two decennials of 20 th century. In the last couple of years four comfortable private hotels were constructed. The capital of Montenegro possesses numerous cultural institutions, among which we point out: the Montenegrin People's Theatre, the University Library, the Town Theatre, the Town Museum, the Cultural and Informational Centre, theatre Dodest.
