Niksic was founded in fourth century A.C. and is situated in the western part of Montenegro, on the vast Niksic plain. There can be still seen some ruins as a testimony of existence of old medieval town called Onogost, former name for Niksic. The name Onogost was entitled by immigrants who came from the region of the mountain Njegoš.About 1900. in Nikšić was built the great church of st.Vasilije Ostroški with the arranged park around it.The church was constructed in Serbian - Byzantium style.
You can come to Nikšić from four capital directions: Podgorica, Sarajevo(via Trebinje) and from Belgrade(via Zabljak). In this town you can come by train from Podgorica. Near Nikšić there are three large lakes, the famous source Vidrovan, the plateau Krnovo and the other pleasurable places for outings and daytrips .On the lake Krstac, very favourable for fishing, you have a restaurant, and near the Liverović lakes there is a good rated motel, enclosed by the wall, with loop-holes and cannon openings. This facility similar to a small castle was built by prince Danilo, in1855.
